Global Sulphur Cap 2020 - what to do?

23. November 2017
The next big thing in the shipping world is the Global Sulphur Cap 2020, a cap on sulphur emissions to air which will enter into force on 1 January 2020. So what is this all about, what are the various alternatives and solutions, the costs, and timeframe for shipowners around the world?
To enlighten us about this topic, we had invited DNV GL to give an introduction and outlook presentation, and 6 leading suppliers in Bergen and Oslo on 20 and 21 November 2017, respectively.
The suppliers were (in alphabetical order):
  • Axpo Nordic
  • Blom Maritime
  • Clean Marine
  • Marine Benchmark Gothenburg
  • Wärtsilä
  • Yara Marine
Three of these are among the world's leading scrubber manufacturers: Clean Marine, Wärtsilä and Yara Marine.
The two seminars proved to be very useful, but we also learned that many are still in the "wait-and-see" mode. We agreed that this is not a valid solution for too long now...
